The Precision Variable Fiber Optical Splitter maintains a constant splitting ratio between the two output fiber ports, regardless of fluctuations of input power and environment conditions. The splitting ratio can be varied with a control voltage of 0-5V at a fast speed, in which 0V is 100% passing through one port and 5V is 100% passing through another port, respectively. This is achieved by integrating two tap detectors at the two fiber outputs of a 1×2 NanoSpeed™ switch and locking to the ratio using a feedback closed-loop circuit. The splitting is proportional to the 0-5V control signal. The non-mechanical device has passed the most stringent mil-spec and space flight qualifications and is designed for over 20 years of continuous operation. The module comes with a wall-plug 12V power supply.
For 2×2 splitters, the splitting for the two inputs is related but functions simultaneously. One can set the ratio of the first input and then measure the splitting ratio of the second input while turning off the first one.
The device is fully bidirectional and works in reverse as a variable optical power combiner. When you send light into Ports 2 and 3 simultaneously, adjusting the control voltage 0-5V directly controls what percentage of light from each port is routed into Port 1. At 0 V Control Signal 100% of the light from Port 2 is transmitted to Port 1. At 5 V Control Signal 100% of the light from Port 3 is transmitted to Port 1. At Intermediate Voltages (e.g., 50/50 setting): You get a 50/50 mix of the optical signals from both inputs exiting Port 1.
